Marrakech - March 2012

I recently returned from my residential field trip to Marrakech. I was there for six days with other Art and Design students who study at my college. It was an incredible experience and here are a few outlines of my favourite bits and the amazing things I saw...

The first day was a bit of an orientation day for everyone to settle into their rooms and meet each other as well as get to know the local area and such. After a day of chat and walking around the local area we decided to venture into the old square for our evening meal.
This was a massive culture shock for the majority of us. The whole square was filled with small pop-up restaurants with staff that literally dragged us into their stall, we laughed it off and sat down to a lovely meal followed by fresh mint tea.

Over the next few days we visited some interesting sites, like the Medersa which is an old empty school that allows entry for non-muslims.
This building was so beautiful, the details and colours are really intricate and the whole design and feel is really calming and peaceful.

Another beautiful place was The Jardin Majorelle which was like a second home to the late Yves Saint Laurent who's ashes are now scattered in the gardens.
The colours are so bright and strong yet there is such a calm feeling in the garden. This was really inspirational for me and i think i will always refer to this when using bright colours.

I had an amazing opportunity to see 'behind the scenes' of the wool dying souks. A few of us went into a natural pharmacy type souk and were friendly with the man who helped us. He took us through the back of the shop, through the court yard and onto the roof. I was blown away at how beautiful the colours and textures were against the dry terracotta walls.

Below are a few more images of the beautiful things I saw in Marrakech.

I really enjoyed my time in Marrakech. I strongly recommend you go there for inspiration especially if you struggle to work with colour.

Pathway Development Shoot

Here are a few photos I took of a friend modelling my designs in my back garden.
I choose to do a mini photo-shoot to give a visual effect and realisation to my garments even though they are just mock ups.
